Manhattan, NY – Four Injured After Wrong-Way Crash Sparks Fire on the Henry Hudson Parkway near West 158th Street in Washington Heights

Nighttime New York City parkway crash scene with police and fire emergency lights and a damaged sedan after a wrong-way car accident

Manhattan, NY (October 6, 2026) – Four people were hurt, one of them seriously, when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle and set off a fire on the Henry Hudson Parkway near West 158th Street in Washington Heights early Tuesday.

According to reports, the crash happened around 1:49 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 13, when a car traveling against traffic struck a second vehicle head-on. A third driver recorded the moments on a dashboard camera and narrowly avoided the wreck, authorities said. The force of the collision sparked a fire that drew a heavy emergency response, and crews shut down all northbound lanes while they worked to put out the flames and reach the people inside the vehicles.

Authorities said two people were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and two NYPD officers were brought to Harlem Hospital. One driver was reported trapped in the wreckage with serious injuries and had to be freed by rescuers before being transported. The northbound lanes reopened at about 4:21 a.m., roughly two and a half hours after the first alert went out. Investigators have not said how the driver ended up going the wrong way, and authorities said it was not yet clear whether impairment played a role.

We hope those injured are able to make a full recovery.

What Are Your Rights After a New York Car Accident?

New York is a no-fault state, which means your own insurance covers your first medical bills and a portion of lost earnings up to your policy limits, no matter who caused the crash. No-fault has a ceiling, though. When a collision causes a “serious injury” as defined by Insurance Law §5102(d), such as a bone fracture, significant disfigurement, or permanent loss of use of a body part, an injured person can step outside the no-fault system and bring a claim directly against the at-fault driver. A wrong-way, head-on crash at highway speed is the kind of event that often produces that level of harm. A knowledgeable NYC car accident lawyer can review the police report, any dashcam footage, and the medical records to figure out which path fits a given case.

Proving fault still matters. New York follows a comparative negligence rule, so the driver who crossed into oncoming traffic can be held responsible for the losses that choice caused. When a claim moves beyond no-fault, two categories of compensation come into play:

  • Economic Compensation: Covers measurable financial losses such as hospital bills, ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, and reduced future earning capacity.
  • Non-Economic Compensation: Accounts for less tangible impacts like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.

New York law gives most injured drivers and passengers three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury lawsuit under CPLR §214. That window can feel far off, but physical evidence like skid marks, vehicle data, and dashcam video can disappear within days, and witness memory fades. Talking with an attorney early protects both a person’s recovery and the proof their claim depends on.
