Bronx, NY (October 9, 2026) – Two women were killed and several other people were hurt Friday afternoon when a speeding car tore through a crowded intersection in the Allerton section of the Bronx, striking pedestrians in a crosswalk and setting off a chain-reaction crash that involved five vehicles.

According to reports, the crash happened just after 2:15 p.m. near the corner of Allerton Avenue and Holland Avenue. Authorities said a sedan moved through the busy intersection at high speed, hit a group of people who were waiting to cross, and then struck cars that had stopped for the traffic light. The force pushed those vehicles into one another, and five cars were involved by the time the wreckage came to rest. Surveillance video reviewed by local news showed the car barreling into the intersection moments before the collision.

Investigators said the driver, an 81-year-old man, appeared to have suffered a medical episode and lost control of the car. Two women, ages 39 and 57, were pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe trauma. An 84-year-old woman was listed in critical condition Friday night, and a 60-year-old pedestrian was expected to recover. Six people inside the vehicles, including the driver, were taken to area hospitals with injuries. Police said no arrests had been made and that everyone involved stayed at the scene while the investigation continued.

Our thoughts are with the families of the two women who lost their lives, and we hope everyone still recovering from this crash is able to heal fully.

What Does New York Law Say About Compensation After a Car Crash?

New York handles most motor vehicle crashes under a no-fault system, which means an injured person’s own insurance first pays for medical bills and a share of lost wages no matter who caused the collision. That coverage has ceilings. When injuries are serious, as defined under Insurance Law §5102(d), an injured person can step outside no-fault and bring a claim directly against a driver who acted negligently. A deadly crash can also support a wrongful death action brought by the family under New York’s estate law. A knowledgeable NYC car accident lawyer can study how a wreck unfolded, who was at fault, and what insurance applies before the evidence disappears.

A driver who causes a crash can still be held responsible when a sudden medical event is blamed, because the law asks whether that driver knew or should have known they were unfit to be behind the wheel. When a claim moves forward, the money an injured person or a grieving family may recover usually falls into two categories:

  • Economic Compensation: Covers measurable financial losses such as hospital bills, ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, and reduced future earning capacity.
  • Non-Economic Compensation: Accounts for less tangible impacts like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.
