Staten Island, NY (October 10, 2026) – One person was killed and four others were hurt in a wrong-way collision involving three vehicles on the West Shore Expressway.
According to reports, a vehicle traveling the wrong way, heading north in the southbound lanes, struck a southbound car before a third vehicle hit both in the chain of impacts that followed. The crash happened on the West Shore Expressway, one of Staten Island’s main north-south routes, and drew emergency crews who treated the injured and worked to reopen the roadway. Three vehicles in total were involved.
Authorities said one driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people, including two passengers, were taken to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition. Police said the drivers involved stayed at the scene, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is working to determine what led to the wrong-way movement. No arrests had been announced, and investigators had not stated a cause. Any findings about fault remain preliminary.
Our condolences go to the family of the person who lost their life, and we hope the four people who were injured are able to make a full recovery.
What Are Your Rights After a Wrong-Way Crash in New York?
New York is a no-fault insurance state. After a crash, a driver’s or passenger’s own insurance usually pays the first round of medical bills and lost wages, no matter who was at fault. That coverage has limits, though. When injuries are serious, state law lets an injured person step outside the no-fault system and bring a claim directly against an at-fault driver for the full scope of their losses. A high-speed, wrong-way collision often causes the kind of severe harm that meets New York’s serious-injury threshold.
Showing that another driver was negligent, and documenting how an injury has reshaped someone’s daily life, takes careful work. Evidence disappears fast, and insurers move quickly to limit what they pay. A skilled NYC car accident lawyer can preserve the record, handle the insurance companies, and pursue two broad categories of compensation:
- Economic Compensation: Covers measurable financial losses such as hospital bills, ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, and reduced future earning capacity.
- Non-Economic Compensation: Accounts for less tangible impacts like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.
When a crash takes a life, the people left behind may also have the right to bring a wrongful death claim for funeral costs, lost financial support, and the loss of a loved one’s care and guidance. Each case turns on its own facts, and the time limits to act can be shorter than most people expect.
