Bronx, NY – One Hospitalized After Moped and Car Collide on University Avenue in University Heights

Nighttime Bronx street after a moped and car collision, scene a NYC car accident lawyer would review

Bronx, NY (October 13, 2026) – One person was hospitalized after a moped and a car collided late Monday night on University Avenue in the University Heights section of the Bronx.

According to reports, the collision happened at around 11:58 p.m. in front of 2545 University Avenue. Emergency crews responded and took one person to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment. Authorities had not said whether the injured person was riding the moped or traveling in the car.

Video taken by a bystander showed the car stopped in the roadway and the moped on its side nearby. Neighbors stepped in to help and directed traffic around the scene until EMS arrived. Officials have not released the cause of the crash, and the investigation is ongoing. No charges had been announced as of this writing, and any charges that may follow are allegations unless proven in court.

We hope those injured are able to make a full recovery.

What Injured Riders and Drivers Should Know About New York Crash Claims

New York handles most crash injuries through a no-fault system. Under Insurance Law §5102(d), your own insurer pays the first round of medical bills and a portion of lost wages regardless of who caused the collision. That coverage has limits, and it does not pay for pain and suffering.

To step outside no-fault and bring a claim against an at-fault driver, an injured person generally has to meet the serious injury threshold: a fracture, significant disfigurement, or a permanent limitation, among other categories. Moped and scooter riders add a wrinkle, because coverage turns on the size and registration of the vehicle, and a rider hurt by a car may have a direct negligence claim rather than a no-fault one. The three-year deadline in CPLR §214 applies to most of these cases.

When a claim does proceed, New York law recognizes two broad categories of damages. A NYC car accident lawyer can explain how each one applies to a specific set of facts:

  • Economic Compensation: Covers measurable financial losses such as hospital bills, ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, and reduced future earning capacity.
  • Non-Economic Compensation: Accounts for less tangible impacts like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.

Documentation decides these cases. Police reports, medical records, photographs of the vehicles, and the names of any witnesses all carry weight, and the value of that evidence drops the longer someone waits to collect it.
