Four Injured After U-Haul Crashes on E 57th St & Madison Ave

Manhattan, NY (October 22, 2025) – Early Tuesday, October 21, four people were injured after an 86-year-old driver operating a U-Haul minivan crashed into multiple structures on the sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan.

According to police reports, the U-Haul first rear-ended a yellow taxi cab stopped at a stop sign while heading westbound on East 57th Street at Madison Avenue. The vehicle then reversed into a Toyota sedan before continuing westbound onto the sidewalk. Along the way, the minivan struck several structures, including a Link kiosk, a bus sign, and a fire hydrant. The bus sign collided with a female pedestrian.

EMS and firefighters responded quickly. Those injured include the female pedestrian, the yellow taxi driver, the passenger in the Toyota sedan, and the U-Haul driver. The cab driver and sedan passenger were transported to the hospital for neck pain, while the pedestrian was taken in stable condition. The U-Haul driver also received medical attention.

Authorities temporarily restricted the area while emergency crews secured the scene, assisted the injured, and cleared debris. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

We hope all those injured make a full and swift recovery.

Risks of Pedestrian and Vehicle Collisions in Midtown

Accidents in busy Midtown streets can result in serious injuries due to high traffic volumes, pedestrians, and nearby structures. Key factors contributing to injuries in these collisions include:

  • Distracted driving: Using phones, GPS, or other devices while driving can delay reaction times and increase the risk of hitting other vehicles or pedestrians.
  • Improper stopping or yielding: Failing to properly stop at signs or misjudging pedestrian right-of-way can trigger chain-reaction collisions.
  • Sidewalk incursions: Vehicles leaving the roadway and striking structures or pedestrians can cause severe trauma, especially in high-density areas like Midtown.
  • Speeding and sudden maneuvers: Sudden acceleration or excessive speed reduces reaction time and can escalate otherwise minor collisions.
  • Age-related driving limitations: Older drivers may experience slower reflexes, reduced vision, or difficulty controlling larger vehicles, increasing the likelihood of accidents in crowded urban streets.
