Brooklyn, NY (October 13, 2025) – On Friday evening, October 10, a fire broke out at a two-story home on Williams Avenue, between Linden Boulevard and De Witt Avenue in East New York. During firefighting operations, three FDNY firefighters were injured when a floor collapsed beneath them.
Firefighters arrived on the scene just before 6 p.m. and quickly knocked down most of the flames within 14 minutes. While searching for any potential occupants trapped inside, the structural beams weakened by the fire gave way. Two firefighters became trapped under debris, while the third also fell through the floor. A mayday was called, and reinforcements rushed to assist.
All three firefighters were removed from the debris and transported to a local hospital in stable condition. An occupant of the home was also treated for smoke inhalation and taken to the hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshals. Authorities praised the quick response of the FDNY and credited their efforts with preventing further tragedy.
We hope those affected by the incident make a full recovery.
Compensation After Residential Fires in Brooklyn
Fires in residential buildings can have devastating consequences, causing serious physical injuries, emotional trauma, and significant financial loss for those affected. Victims may suffer burns, smoke inhalation, or other injuries that require immediate medical attention and long-term treatment. Beyond the physical toll, fires often destroy personal belongings, furniture, electronics, and essential documents, leaving residents without critical items and support systems.
Additionally, temporary housing or relocation expenses can quickly accumulate, creating further financial strain for displaced families. In Brooklyn, tenants, property owners, or even firefighters injured while responding to fires may be entitled to seek compensation when negligence, unsafe building conditions, or other preventable factors contributed to the incident.
Compensation in residential fire cases can cover a wide range of damages. Medical expenses often include emergency care, hospital stays, surgeries, medications, and ongoing rehabilitation or therapy required for recovery. Property losses can encompass not only damaged or destroyed personal belongings but also essential household items, electronics, clothing, and sometimes sentimental items with irreplaceable value.
Victims who are temporarily displaced may recover costs for alternative housing, storage, or relocation, while those unable to work due to injuries or the aftermath of the fire may pursue lost wages or income. Pain and suffering are other important aspects of compensation, reflecting the emotional distress, anxiety, and disruption caused by the traumatic event.
Liability in residential fires can be complex and may involve multiple parties. Property owners have a duty to maintain safe living conditions, and they may be held responsible if faulty wiring, structural issues, blocked exits, or failure to maintain fire safety equipment contributed to the blaze. Contractors, appliance manufacturers, or even other residents may also share responsibility if their actions or negligence played a role.
Determining accountability requires a detailed investigation, including reviewing fire department reports, examining witness statements, analyzing building inspections, and evaluating any applicable safety codes. A thorough legal review is often essential to ensure victims are able to pursue the full compensation they are entitled to and to hold the responsible parties accountable.
Consulting a New York personal injury lawyer is essential for navigating the claims process. An attorney can help document damages, gather evidence, negotiate with insurance companies, and ensure that victims receive the maximum compensation available under New York law. Acting quickly is important due to time limits for filing claims.
