Brooklyn, NY (September 11, 2025) – On Tuesday afternoon, September 9, a worker tragically lost his life when a parapet, or rooftop wall, collapsed on him at a one-story garage in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn.
The incident occurred just before 3:00 p.m. at 113 Sunnyside Avenue, a one-story garage that shares a lot with a six-story building at 224 Highland Boulevard, between Bulwer and Heath Place. Officials reported that the parapet wall fell on the back of a 58-year-old man while he was on the roof of the garage. The victim was removed from the collapse via aerial ladder and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inspectors from the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) found no structural damage to the roof or interior of the garage. However, the DOB issued a full stop-work order for all construction and repair activities at 113 Sunnyside Avenue and a partial vacate order for the area of the garage roof where the collapse occurred. A violation was also issued to the property owner for failing to properly maintain the structure. The DOB’s investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
We extend our condolences to the family and coworkers affected by this tragic accident.
