Manhattan, NY - Two Hurt in Fire on 49th St near 10th Ave

Manhattan, NY (June 3, 2025)  – A blaze tore through a residential building in Hell’s Kitchen early Sunday morning, June 1, leaving two individuals injured, including a responding firefighter.

The fire broke out just before 1 a.m. at a four-story apartment building on West 49th Street near 10th Avenue. Intense flames and heavy smoke poured from the top floor as crews worked through the night to bring the situation under control.

Dramatic footage captured firefighters battling the fire as it spread across the upper level of the building. One civilian sustained injuries and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. A firefighter was also hurt during the response but is expected to recover fully.

More than 100 members of the FDNY and EMS teams were on the scene, working for hours to extinguish the flames. The fire was declared under control by around 4:15 a.m.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire as the community begins to recover from the alarming incident.

We hope the wounded individuals recover swiftly.

New York Structure Fires

In Manhattan, where residential towers, aging walk-ups, and commercial buildings stand side by side, structure fires continue to pose a serious threat. The borough’s dense population and high-rise architecture amplify the dangers, often turning a single spark into a major emergency. According to FDNY data, thousands of fire-related incidents occur across New York City each year, and Manhattan remains one of the most impacted boroughs when it comes to injuries caused by structural fires.

Older buildings—many with outdated electrical systems, insufficient fire suppression features, or broken smoke alarms—are particularly vulnerable. When a fire breaks out, residents may have little time to escape, and the consequences can be devastating.

Common Injuries Sustained in Manhattan Fires

Survivors of structure fires often face a long and painful road to recovery. Common injuries include:

  • Burns: Ranging from first to third degree, burns can require extensive medical treatment, surgeries, and long-term care. They may also leave permanent physical and emotional scars.
  • Smoke Inhalation: Inhaling superheated air and toxic fumes can cause severe damage to the lungs and airways, leading to chronic respiratory problems.
  • Trauma from Falls or Collapses: During an emergency evacuation, structural damage and panic can result in falls, broken bones, or head injuries.
  • Mental and Emotional Harm: The shock of a fire—especially one that results in injury or displacement—can trigger long-term psychological effects, such as PTSD, anxiety, or depression.
