Brooklyn, NY (May 15, 2025) — A tragic pedestrian accident claimed the life of a 68-year-old woman in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, according to authorities.
The victim, identified as Maurette Lafleur, was walking in a marked crosswalk on Rutland Road when she was hit by a vehicle around 6 p.m. Police say a 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC, driven by a 64-year-old man, was making a left turn from East 95th Street when it struck Lafleur as she crossed from north to south.
Emergency medical services rushed Lafleur to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, but she was later pronounced dead from her injuries.
The driver remained at the scene following the incident, and as of Thursday evening, no charges have been filed. The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad from the Highway District is actively looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Brooklyn Pedestrian Accidents
Brooklyn’s bustling streets and dense urban layout make it a walkable borough—but they also present serious risks for pedestrians. Every year, numerous lives are lost in pedestrian-related crashes across the city, with Brooklyn seeing a troubling share of these fatal incidents.
According to data from the New York City Department of Transportation, hundreds of pedestrian fatalities occur annually in the five boroughs, many of them in crosswalks or near intersections. These heartbreaking events not only devastate families but also raise pressing questions about traffic safety, accountability, and city planning.
Here are some of the lasting consequences families face after a fatal pedestrian crash:
Lack of Immediate Accountability: In many cases, fatal pedestrian collisions involve drivers who remain unidentified or fail to face immediate legal consequences. Families are often left waiting for answers while investigations unfold—adding to the emotional burden of their loss.
Emergency Response Gaps: In high-traffic areas, emergency response times can vary. When a crash occurs in a busy corridor, delays in lifesaving medical care can dramatically alter outcomes, especially for vulnerable pedestrians.
Ongoing Psychological Trauma: The sudden loss of a loved one in such a violent manner can cause long-lasting grief and emotional suffering. When a pedestrian is killed, their family members must not only cope with the loss but also with the trauma of how it happened, often in a public, preventable setting.
Legal and Insurance Complications: Fatal pedestrian crashes often result in complex legal claims. Families may be forced to navigate wrongful death suits, insurance disputes, or questions about municipal liability. Without experienced legal support, pursuing justice and financial stability can be an uphill battle.
