Brooklyn, NY (September 9, 2025) – On Monday afternoon, September 8, a firefighter is recovering, and one civilian has been arrested following a major apartment fire in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
The fire broke out just before 1:00 p.m. at a six-story residential building located on Hawthorne Street between Rogers and Nostrand Avenues. Heavy flames and thick black smoke were seen pouring from the top floor as FDNY crews arrived at the scene within minutes.
According to the FDNY, the blaze spread through the cockloft area of three top-floor apartments. Crews used five handlines to bring the fire under control by around 2:00 p.m. One firefighter sustained injuries and was treated at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that at least 18 apartments sustained possible water damage. Residents were assisted by the Red Cross, while the New York City Department of Buildings assessed the structural safety of the property.
Officials reported that FDNY operations were hindered after two nearby fire hydrants were found blocked by illegally parked cars. The FDNY later reminded the public that parking at a hydrant is illegal and punishable by a criminal summons.
Fire Marshals arrested a civilian on suspicion of using a blow torch illegally, which is being investigated as the possible cause of the fire.
