Hit-and-Run Accidents on Bronx Expressways
Hit-and-run accidents are a persistent danger on Bronx expressways, including the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87), the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95), and the Bruckner Expressway (I-278). These high-speed roadways are often congested, especially during overnight hours when drivers may be more prone to reckless behavior. Unfortunately, when a crash happens on an expressway, the risk of severe injury or death is high due to the speed and size of vehicles involved.
Several factors contribute to hit-and-run collisions on Bronx expressways:
- High speeds and sudden lane changes: Drivers moving too quickly may strike a pedestrian, another vehicle, or even a disabled car on the shoulder.
- Impaired driving: Alcohol and drug use are common causes of late-night expressway crashes, often leading drivers to flee the scene.
- Poor visibility: Low lighting at certain sections of expressways makes it harder for drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians.
- Fear of legal consequences: Some drivers leave the scene to avoid DWI charges, outstanding warrant checks, or uninsured motorist penalties.
When drivers fail to remain at the scene, victims and their families face additional hardships. Without immediate identification of the vehicle, investigations can take longer, and accountability becomes more difficult.
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad uses roadway cameras, witness statements, and forensic evidence to track down hit-and-run drivers. Still, prevention remains critical. Awareness, defensive driving, and strict enforcement of traffic laws are key to reducing these tragic incidents on Bronx expressways.
