Bronx, NY (November 6, 2025) – On Wednesday, November 5, a fire that led to a vehicle explosion at the 955 block of Westchester Avenue in the Longwood section of the Bronx sent multiple firefighters to a local hospital for evaluation.
The FDNY responded to a report of a car fire and explosion at approximately 7:06 p.m. between Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street. Fire investigators believe the blaze was caused by the careless disposal of smoking material, which ignited nearby garbage and spread to vehicles parked nearby. The van’s gas tank ultimately caused the explosion.
Five firefighters were hospitalized, including one who required treatment for serious burns to the face. No other injuries were reported at the scene. Strong winds at the time contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, and multiple vehicles and trash were destroyed. The NYPD searched the surrounding area following the incident.
We hope all those injured in the accident make a smooth recovery.
Fire and Explosion Accidents in The Bronx
Fires and explosions can occur unexpectedly and often have serious consequences for anyone nearby. In The Bronx, common causes include careless disposal of smoking materials, accumulated trash or debris, and vehicle fires. When flames reach parked vehicles, fuel tanks, or other flammable materials can trigger an explosion, creating a dangerous situation for bystanders, residents, and emergency responders. Strong winds and dry conditions can further accelerate the spread of fire, increasing the risk of injury and property damage.
In addition to these common causes, electrical malfunctions, improperly stored flammable liquids, and mechanical failures in vehicles or machinery can also ignite fires. Urban areas like The Bronx, with dense populations and closely spaced buildings, increase the likelihood of fire spreading rapidly to nearby structures, vehicles, or public spaces. Trash and debris in alleyways or near buildings often serve as fuel, while combustible materials inside parked cars or storage areas can magnify the impact of a fire.
Even when safety precautions are followed, fire and explosion incidents can result in serious injuries such as burns, smoke inhalation, fractures, and other long-term health complications. Beyond the immediate physical harm, victims may face substantial medical bills, lost wages, and emotional trauma.
First responders, including firefighters, are especially at risk when attending these emergencies, and injuries sustained on the job can have lasting impacts. Rapid response, adherence to safety protocols, and public awareness of fire hazards are essential to minimize damage and prevent injury in these high-risk situations.
