Brooklyn, NY (May 13, 2025) – A child was injured Sunday evening after being struck by a cyclist while exiting a school bus at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn.

The incident occurred on May 11 at approximately 5:52 p.m., when a cyclist traveling along the controversial bike lane collided with the young boy as he stepped off the bus. Witnesses reported that the cyclist was moving at a high speed and appeared unable to stop in time as the child crossed into the bike lane.

Police in Brooklyn continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

We hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.

Brooklyn Pedestrian Accidents

Brooklyn is one of the most densely populated boroughs in New York City, and pedestrian accidents are a frequent occurrence on its bustling streets. According to recent city data, hundreds of pedestrian-involved collisions happen every month in Brooklyn, with hotspots like Flatbush Avenue and Atlantic Avenue consistently reporting high numbers, especially during evening rush hours and school dismissal times.

Pedestrian safety is a growing concern in urban environments. Here’s a breakdown of some key factors contributing to these accidents:

Busy Intersections and Crosswalks: Many Brooklyn intersections are poorly marked or lack adequate crossing signals. In high-traffic areas, drivers may fail to yield or turn aggressively, putting pedestrians at risk even when they have the right of way.

Driver Distraction: With cell phone use, navigation systems, and other in-vehicle distractions, drivers may not be fully aware of pedestrians until it’s too late. A brief lapse in attention can lead to devastating consequences.

Speeding and Failure to Yield: Despite posted speed limits, many drivers exceed safe speeds on streets like Eastern Parkway and Flatlands Avenue. Speeding significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to someone crossing the street.

Lack of Visibility: Poor lighting, parked cars near crosswalks, and nighttime conditions can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, especially children and older adults.

High Foot Traffic: Brooklyn’s vibrant communities and reliance on walking as a primary form of transportation means more people are on foot at all hours. With schools, transit hubs, and retail corridors nearby, pedestrian volume is high throughout the day.

If you or a loved one has been struck by a vehicle while walking in Brooklyn, it is essential to speak with a Brooklyn pedestrian accident attorney as soon as possible. Legal support can make all the difference when dealing with medical bills, lost wages, and long-term recovery.
