Brooklyn, NY - Elderly Man Hurt in Pedestrian Crash on E 12th St

Brooklyn, NY (June 3, 2025) – An 87-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by an MTA bus while walking in a Brooklyn crosswalk Monday evening, June 2, authorities confirmed.

The collision occurred around 6:40 p.m. in Sheepshead Bay, as the elderly pedestrian was midway through the crosswalk on East 12th Street. According to police and surveillance footage from the scene, a B36 bus making a left turn from Avenue Z hit the man, pinning him beneath the vehicle.

Witnesses described the aftermath as disturbing. “His shoe was left right there in the street,” one bystander told News 12. “It was awful to see.”

Authorities say the man had the right of way when the crash occurred. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition as the investigation into the incident continues.

We hope the injured individual makes a timely recovery.

New York Pedestrian Accidents

Brooklyn is known for its vibrant neighborhoods and bustling streets, but with that comes a high risk of pedestrian accidents. The borough’s crowded intersections, busy crosswalks, and heavy foot traffic create an environment where collisions between vehicles and pedestrians happen all too often, leading to serious injuries.

Common Injuries Sustained by Pedestrians

While some incidents result in minor scrapes and bruises, many pedestrian accidents in Brooklyn cause severe harm, such as:

  • Head and Brain Trauma: Impact with vehicles can cause concussions or traumatic brain injuries, often leading to lasting cognitive and emotional challenges.
  • Neck and Spinal Injuries: Sudden jolts from a collision may cause whiplash, spinal cord damage, or herniated discs that require extensive medical care.
  • Broken Bones and Internal Injuries: The force of being struck frequently leads to fractures or internal trauma that necessitate emergency treatment and long recovery times.
  • Emotional and Psychological Effects: Beyond physical injuries, many victims face anxiety, PTSD, and depression after these traumatic events.

Determining Liability in Brooklyn Pedestrian Accidents

Liability in pedestrian accidents can be complicated. Common factors include driver distraction, speeding, failure to yield, or poor road conditions. Accidents involving delivery trucks, city buses, or rideshare vehicles add further complexity to insurance claims and legal responsibility.
