Manhattan, NY - Multi-Bus Collision on W 40th St near Ninth Ave

Manhattan, NY (July 2, 2025) – A collision involving three NJ Transit buses disrupted the Wednesday morning commute and left at least a dozen people injured at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. on the express bus entrance ramp at West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue. According to Port Authority Police, the incident took place on the fourth level of the terminal, a key access point for buses entering from the Lincoln Tunnel.

Emergency crews responded swiftly, treating 12 individuals for injuries. One person sustained moderate injuries and had to be extricated from the wreckage, while 10 others were transported to nearby hospitals with minor injuries. One of the injured was a bus driver, officials confirmed.

FDNY Deputy Chief Jason Saffon noted the complexity of the scene, calling the crash site “a difficult location to access” due to its elevated position and proximity to the tunnel.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal remained open during the response, but the express bus lane was shut down for several hours. NJ Transit temporarily suspended service to the terminal and rerouted affected buses to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, and Hoboken Terminal. Bus traffic was redirected to the terminal’s upper levels as crews worked to clear the scene.

The crash also caused significant delays in and around the Lincoln Tunnel, adding to the morning traffic congestion. Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the collision.

We hope for the full recovery of those with injuries.

New York Bus Accidents

Manhattan’s streets are among the busiest and most congested in the world—making bus travel both essential and risky. Every day, thousands of buses move through the borough, from MTA and NJ Transit vehicles to private and charter lines. While these services are vital to the city’s infrastructure, they’re not immune to accidents. And when crashes happen, passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers often suffer serious, life-altering injuries.

Bus accidents in Manhattan can be especially dangerous due to the sheer size and weight of the vehicles, the density of traffic, and the high volume of pedestrians. Whether it’s a multi-vehicle pile-up at the Port Authority, a sideswipe on 14th Street, or a pedestrian struck near Times Square, the consequences can be devastating.

In many cases, these accidents are preventable. Common causes include:

  • Distracted or fatigued bus drivers
  • Speeding or aggressive driving in traffic
  • Mechanical failures or improper maintenance
  • Unsafe lane changes or failure to yield
  • Poor visibility in high-traffic areas

If you or someone you love has been injured in a bus crash in Manhattan, the road to recovery can be overwhelming. Medical care, missed time at work, emotional trauma, and insurance complications can add stress at an already difficult time.
