Manhattan, NY (July 19, 2025) — A devastating crash near the Manhattan Bridge claimed the lives of two individuals early on the morning of July 19. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Bowery and Canal Street in the Chinatown neighborhood.
According to court records, a Chevy Malibu was traveling at a high rate of speed—over 100 mph—across the Manhattan Bridge when it struck a bicyclist and a pedestrian. The victims were identified as Kevin Cruickshank, who was riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, and May Kwok, who was seated on a bench at the time of the collision. Both individuals suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the initial impact, the vehicle continued on and collided with an NYPD van, which was sent careening across the intersection. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the crash.
The vehicle was later recovered near Elizabeth and Hester Streets, where responding officers located and detained two individuals. Investigators also recovered a bottle of alcohol and two firearms with ammunition inside the car.
The incident remains under active investigation.
New York Pedestrian Accidents
New York City’s streets are among the busiest in the world—and for pedestrians, they can also be among the most dangerous. Every year, hundreds of people are struck by vehicles while walking in the five boroughs. Tragically, many of these incidents result in fatal injuries, leaving behind grieving families and unanswered questions.
Fatal pedestrian accidents are especially common in high-traffic areas like Times Square, the Lower East Side, and along major avenues such as Broadway and Flatbush. Intersections with heavy foot traffic and fast-moving vehicles are often hotspots for these tragic collisions.
These deadly accidents can involve:
- Pedestrians hit while crossing at crosswalks
- Individuals struck by turning vehicles failing to yield
- Collisions involving speeding or distracted drivers
- Multi-vehicle crashes where pedestrians are caught in the chaos
- Large commercial trucks or buses failing to stop in time
In many cases, victims suffer catastrophic injuries on impact, and their families are left to deal with emotional trauma, funeral expenses, and a long path to justice. Determining liability in these cases can be complicated, particularly when multiple vehicles are involved or when the driver flees the scene.
