Bronx, NY (August 25, 2025) – On Sunday night, August 24, two firefighters were injured while battling a two-alarm fire inside a six-story apartment building in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx.
FDNY Assistant Deputy Chief Mike Woods reported that one firefighter sustained serious injuries, while another suffered minor injuries while fighting flames in the top corner of the building. The fire broke out around 7 p.m. on the fifth floor of the building on Woodycrest Avenue, between West 167th and 168th Streets, where firefighters discovered significant clutter inside the apartment.
Video footage captured bright orange flames and thick black smoke billowing from the windows as nearly 100 firefighters worked for approximately 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The fire was confined to about three apartments, according to FDNY officials.
Residents were displaced, and the Red Cross was on scene to assist tenants affected by the fire. Diana Yepez, visiting her daughter at the time, said her daughter is now temporarily homeless. “This building’s been there, never been a fire. She’s been living there since she was six years old,” Yepez said emotionally.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the FDNY continues to investigate.
We hope those injured are able to recover quickly and fully.
Fire-Related Building Accidents in the Bronx
Building fires in the Bronx can cause serious injuries, property damage, and temporary or permanent displacement for residents. Fires in multi-story apartment buildings often involve smoke inhalation, burns, and other physical injuries, particularly for residents and emergency responders such as firefighters. Even when contained quickly, fires can leave multiple families without a home, as personal belongings and living spaces are destroyed or heavily damaged.
Emergency responders, including the FDNY and Red Cross, play a critical role in providing immediate medical care, assisting displaced residents, and ensuring that fires are brought under control as safely as possible. Fire investigations often reveal contributing factors such as cluttered apartments, faulty electrical systems, or unattended cooking equipment, highlighting the importance of fire safety and preparedness.
For victims of building fires, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Medical bills, temporary housing costs, lost wages, and the emotional toll of displacement can create long-term financial and personal challenges. Therefore, a New York City personal injury attorney with experience in fire-related accidents can help victims navigate insurance claims, pursue compensation for medical expenses, property loss, and pain and suffering, and ensure that those responsible for negligence are held accountable.
