Queens, NY – Motorcyclist Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on the Jackie Robinson Parkway near the Van Wyck Expressway

Emergency vehicles at a New York City parkway interchange at dawn after a motorcycle accident, NYC motorcycle accident scene

Queens, NY (October 21, 2026) – A motorcyclist was killed early Wednesday after his bike struck a guardrail on the Jackie Robinson Parkway near the ramp to the Van Wyck Expressway in the Kew Gardens Interchange.

According to reports, the crash happened around 6 a.m. as the rider headed north toward the Van Wyck ramp. Authorities said the motorcycle hit a guardrail while entering the ramp. Emergency responders took the rider, a man in his early 20s, to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he could not be saved.

Police said it remains unclear what caused the crash, including whether speed or limited visibility played a part, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved. The Kew Gardens Interchange, where the Jackie Robinson Parkway, the Van Wyck Expressway, and the Grand Central Parkway all converge, is known for sharp ramp curves, short merge lanes, and heavy traffic at nearly every hour. The investigation remained open, and authorities had not released the rider’s name.

Our deepest condolences go out to the young man’s family and loved ones during this painful time.

Who can be held responsible after a fatal motorcycle crash in New York?

A single-vehicle motorcycle crash rarely tells its whole story at the scene. New York investigators and injury attorneys look at whether a roadway defect, a missing or poorly maintained guardrail, loose debris, a sudden mechanical failure, or another driver who forced the rider off his line contributed to the collision. When someone else’s negligence causes a death, New York law lets the person’s family bring a wrongful death claim under EPTL §5-4.1, usually within two years of the date of death.

Motorcyclists sit in an unusual spot under state law. New York’s no-fault insurance system, which pays the first $50,000 in medical bills and lost wages for drivers and passengers in cars, does not cover motorcycle riders at all. That gap means an injured rider or a grieving family often has to recover directly from an at-fault party rather than from a no-fault policy. A NYC car accident lawyer can move quickly to photograph the roadway, pull maintenance and design records for the ramp, and bring in reconstruction experts before physical evidence is cleared or repaved. A wrongful death judgment also carries 9 percent interest under CPLR §5004. Families who lose a loved one may be able to recover two broad categories of damages:

  • Economic Compensation: Covers measurable financial losses such as hospital bills, ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, and reduced future earning capacity.
  • Non-Economic Compensation: Accounts for less tangible impacts like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.
