Child mortality rates due to auto crashes

New York parents should know that the highest rate of child motor vehicle deaths is found inthe South, while the Northeast has the lowest rate. The study conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Harvard University also found that the occurrences of the fatalities are often linked to the incorrect use of seat belts.

The study not only examined the state trends in fatalities to children under the age of 15 due to motor vehicle crashes, it also considered the variations in geography and state statutes and regulations. During the 2010 to 2014 time period that was the focus of the study, there were 2,885 child fatalities from motor vehicle accidents.

The South was the most deadly for children, accounting for 1,550 child deaths and a mortality rate of 1.34 per 100,000 children per year. The Northeast was the safest region with 189 child fatalities, which corresponded to a mortality rate of 0.38 per 100,000 children a year. In the Midwest, there were 585 child deaths during the study period, which resulted in a mortality rate of 0.76 per 100,000 children annually. The West, which had 561 children die in fatal wrecks, had a mortality rate of 0.94 per 100,000 children per year.

An analysis of the data collected indicated that state laws that are consistently enforced are critical to deterring child auto fatalities. It also showed that a revision of weak laws and increasing enforcement could potentially save more lives. Ensuring the proper use of restraints showed the possibility of being most effective in preventing deaths.

Even when not fatal, auto accidents can dramatically change the lives of those who are injured as well as their family members. When it can be determined that the accident was caused by the negligence of another driver, an attorney could assist in seeking compensation on behalf of the victim for the losses that have been sustained.
