Hyundai and Kia initiate 1.5 million vehicle recall

New York drivers should be aware that, on April 7, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation stated that they intended to recall about 1.48 million vehicles that were sold in the United States, South Korea and Canada. Approximately 1.19 million of the affected vehicles being recalled were sold in the U.S.

The companies initiated the recall on the vehicles due to an engine issue, though the exact problem was not stated. The vehicles that were affected reportedly included the Santa Fe and Sonata from Hyundai and the Sorento, Sportage and Optima from Kia. It was reported that the recall could cost the two companies approximately $220 million, a blow as they have not been selling well in the United States.

Both Hyundai and Kia have had to initiate recalls in the past due to problems associated with their engines. The companies manufacture the engines themselves and the recalls were associated with the manufacturing process. Most recently, Hyundai recalled about 470,000 of their Sonata sedans, which were sold in the U.S., to fix faulty engine parts.

If a manufacturer sells a vehicle that has an auto defect that results in serious injuries , an attorney may assist with filing a products liability claim against the responsible manufacturer. Depending on the circumstances, the attorney may seek compensation from the manufacturer to cover medical bills and other losses, especially if there is evidence that the manufacturer was aware of the defects and still sold the vehicle. The case often will get settled out of court, which saves time, though the attorney may take the case to trial if an appropriate agreement cannot be reached.
