Volvo recalls more than 5,500 vehicles

New York residents who drive 2017 model year Volvo XC90 SUVs, S90 sedans or V90 Cross Country wagons may soon be receiving recall notices in the mail. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Feb. 16 that the Swedish car maker was recalling approximately 5,500 vehicles to address possible issues with their curtain airbags. Volvo dealers are expected to begin working on the recall on April 1.

The curtain airbags in the vehicles in question are secured by bolts made by a Polish company that may have been treated with a chemical that could cause them to break. The problem was discovered when a Volvo mechanic found a broken bolt after removing an interior handle while performing an unrelated repair. Airbags that are not properly secured can inflate unpredictably following a collision, and this could cause serious injuries to vehicle occupants according to the NHTSA.

The recall announcement made no mention of any incidents or injuries related to the problem, and Volvo says that drivers may notice an unusual noise coming from the curtain airbags when bolts have fractured and become detached. The bolts will be inspected and replaced as necessary by Volvo dealers, and concerned owners are advised to contact either Volvo or the NHTSA for more information.

Both Volvo and the NHTSA deserve credit for addressing this possibly serious safety issue quickly, but manufacturers are not always eager to admit that mistakes may have been made. This is because product liability lawsuits often involve large numbers of plaintiffs, and manufacturers may be ordered to pay punitive damages when they are found to have ignored known safety issues. When the makers of consumer products have not taken all reasonable steps to protect the public, experienced personal injury attorneys may pursue civil remedies on behalf of those who have been harmed as a result.
