Breast implants may lead to cancer in New Yorkers

According to information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, nine people have died as a result of a type of cancer that is associated with breast implants. It is not a type of breast cancer; however, it has been found around breast implants. Known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, this cancer impacts cells in the immune system and may be located on lymph nodes or the skin.

Per a report from the FDA, women with breast implants have a slightly greater risk of developing this type of breast cancer. Symptoms of this type of cancer include swelling and redness in the area around the site of implants. It appears that people who have textured rather than smooth surfaces on their implants are more likely to develop this type of cancer.

As of Feb. 1, the administration has received 359 reports of cancer cases related to breast implants. However, it's difficult to tell how many cases of cancer may be caused by implants. For starters, worldwide reporting is far from complete. In addition, a lack of global sales data reduces the ability of researchers to determine how many women may have implants.

It is up to product manufacturers to ensure that what they create is safe. Organizations must make sure that automobiles, food and children's toys, just to name a few, are safe for consumers. If someone believes that they have been harmed by a dangerous product, they may have legal recourse against the manufacturer, and a lawyer could help them determine their options.
