Survey finds young drivers take risks on the road

Younger drivers in New York and elsewhere may be more likely to take risks on the road than other age groups. This was according to a survey by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. It found that 88.4 percent of drivers between the ages of 19-24 engaged in dangerous behavior while behind the wheel in the last 30 days. In 2015, there were 35,092 traffic fatalities, which was a 7 percent increase from 2014, and it was the largest percentage increase in 50 years.

Nearly half of the millennials who responded to the survey said that ran a red light even if they could have stopped safely. In addition, 12 percent said that it was acceptable to exceed the speed limit by 10 miles an hour in a school zone. Some of the study's findings indicate that many motorists may engage in behaviors that they don't tolerate from others.

For instance, 2.5 percent of drivers said that they drove within an hour of consuming marijuana and alcohol. However, 63.5 percent of drivers were in favor of a proposal to reduce the legal blood alcohol limit to .05 percent from .08 percent. Furthermore, 81 percent said that ignition interlock devices should be given to those who have been convicted of a first drunk driving offense.

Texting and driving or driving through a red light may be the actions of a negligent driver. If such a driver causes an accident, he or she may be liable for damages caused in the crash. An injured victim may be entitled to compensation for medical bills or lost wages as the result of a lawsuit filed with the assistance of an attorney against the at-fault motorist.
