Spike in traffic deaths alarm safety advocates

The daily commute for many people in New York could be getting more dangerous according to a report from the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. Motivated by a 7.2 percent year-over-year increase in roadway deaths in 2015 and a jump of approximately 8 percent during the first nine months of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015, the safety group has urged legislatures throughout the country to adopt tougher laws to enforce the use of seat belts and motorcycle helmets.

Other items identified within the report that could reduce deaths from car accidents include using booster seats for children, licensing teen drivers in graduated steps, fighting impaired driving and cracking down on texting while driving. The safety advocates presented a total of 376 laws that could reduce motor vehicle fatalities.

The president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety said that many state legislatures could do more to reduce fatalities. For example, 16 states do not enforce seat belt use for front-seat passengers, and 32 states have nothing on the books about wearing seat belts in the back seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 35,000 people died in car crashes in 2015 and 2.4 million were injured.

In far too many cases, drivers who were speeding, drinking or distracted harm innocent people. A person dealing with a serious injury after a wreck might pursue compensation from such a driver with the help of an attorney. A lawsuit detailing medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost income along with evidence of the at-fault motorist's negligence could be prepared and filed.
