Children's deaths possibly due to defective baby products

New York parents should be aware that baby products are not always safe. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, over the past six years 10 children have died after using homeopathic teething tablets, and there have been 400 adverse events involving the tablets. In response, the FDA has initiated an investigation and has cautioned parents to stop using the products and seek immediate medical attention if their children begin to experience difficulties.

The maker of the baby products stated in an email that it understood that the FDA investigation was still in progress, and said that it was unaware of any data supporting the warnings regarding their products. In a letter that it posted to its website, the company stated that it was discontinuing the distribution of its teething products in the United States.

In 2010, the FDA had issued a safety alert concerning the tablets, and the products were recalled by the company. According to the results of testing conducted by the FDA, there were inconsistent amounts of belladonna in the tablets. The FDA had also expressed concern that the bottles for the tablets were not child-resistant. The company has stated that it had reduced the amount of belladonna in the tablet formula and had changed its production process.

In lieu of using teething tablets or gels when a baby is in pain, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents use a clean finger to massage the baby's gums or feed the child frozen foods, such as frozen berries or bananas. An appropriate dosage of acetaminophen may also be administered.

Dangerous or defective products can cause great harm to their users. Attorneys representing injured plaintiffs could seek compensation for their clients through product liability lawsuits filed against the manufacturers and distributors.
