Recent college graduate killed in Queens car crash

A 23-year-old woman was killed in a catastrophic car crash in Queens on Sept. 11. She was a recent graduate of New York City College of Technology.

According to authorities, the victim and six others piled into a 2004 Audi A6 after attending a surprise birthday party at a local club. The car was designed for five occupants, so she sat on a passenger's lap in the backseat. The Audi ran a stop sign on 120th Street at Linden Boulevard in South Ozone Park at approximately 4:25 a.m., hitting a Honda Civic. The Audi then smashed into a wall and overturned.

The victim suffered head trauma and was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where she later died. The other occupants of the Audi were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the Honda, a 53-year-old man, was charged with driving without a license. The driver of the Audi has not yet been charged, but authorities are investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Individuals injured in a car crash have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit, whether or not police choose to file charges in the case. By using accident investigation reports, toxicology results and witness testimony, it may be possible to prove a negligent driver is responsible for a victim's injuries. If the lawsuit is successful, a victim could be awarded compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other losses. If a victim dies in a car accident, the surviving family members may want to speak with an attorney about the advisability of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver.
