Construction job accidents nearly tripled since 2012

Since 2012, there has been a steady increase in the amount of workplace accidents in the construction industry, according to reports from the office of New York City's Mayor de Blasio released Sept. 19. In fact, the increase is greater than the amount of new construction jobs that have been available from 2012 to 2016.

Of those four years, the 12-month period from June 2015 to June 2016 had the highest rate of construction-related accidents, with more than 500 injuries occurring. This amount marks a year-over-year increase of 62 percent. One reason for the increase in injuries is the fast growth of new construction jobs. In fact, during that same 12-month span, there were approximately 42,000 construction jobs, which was an increase of 8.8 percent.

Since 2012, New York City has seen a major growth in construction, which resulted in a 35 percent increase in construction jobs. The activity may be partly to do with building developers pushing to start their 2015 building projects before the 421a tax abatement program expired. However, with the increase, construction-related injuries nearly tripled, according to figures. This increase may have been the result of lower construction safety standards, and the city's mayor claimed he will work to improve these standards, as reported.

People who work in the construction industry face risks every day. From operating dangerous and heavy machinery and handling toxic materials to working from treacherous heights and around high voltage electrical systems, one mishap can leave a construction worker with severe injuries that could quickly turn fatal. When the accident is caused by the negligence of a non-employer third party, such as a defective piece of equipment, an attorney might suggest the filing of a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault manufacturer.
