Nursery products can result in serious injuries

New York parents may be interested to learn that an estimated 66,000 infants and toddlers under the age of three end up in the emergency room each year after being injured by nursery products. A study conducted by an Ohio children's hospital looked at data from between 1991 and 2011.

For the study, nursery items included changing tables, baby carriers, cribs and bouncers. In about 80 percent of the cases, the infant or toddler fell out of the nursery item. The most commonnursery items that were involved in the injuries included baby carriers, which contributed to 20 percent of injuries, cribs or mattresses at 19 percent, and strollers, at 17 percent of the injuries.

Researchers stated that the injuries were not necessarily caused by the parents but by the manufacturers who designed the nursery products. Until changes are made to make these items safer, however, it is recommended that parents check for recalls regularly, read the manuals provided with the product before using them and register the product if possible.

If a child suffers an injury when using a product that was not made correctly or tested properly, parents may be eligible to file a products liability lawsuit against the manufacturer. An attorney may determine if the parents have a legitimate case against the manufacturer before filing the paperwork. If the parents do have a case, the attorney may gather evidence that shows the severity of the injury the child suffered and the associated damages, including medical bills. In many cases, the attorney may work with the manufacturer to settle the case out of court so the parents can focus on their injured child.
