Making videos with Snapchat speed filter can turn deadly

Many safety experts have questioned the role Snapchat's speed filter plays in persuading drivers to break speed limits. A recent news report revealed how deadly snapping can be when drivers decide to use the app recklessly while driving in New York or anywhere else in the U.S.

In October, a 22-year-old man decided to test his speeding ability using the Snapchat speed filter while driving down a Florida highway. While his 19-year-old passenger rode along for the adventure, the driver sped the vehicle up from 82.6 mph to 115.6 mph. This decision cost them their lives when they struck a vehicle traveling on the opposite side of the highway. Three passengers in the other vehicle, a mother and two of her children, also died.

An 18-year-old woman was fortunate to survive the car accident she allegedly caused after using the speed filter feature prior to colliding with another vehicle. Although no one died, the victim in the other car suffered traumatic brain injuries. In response to the allegations of this distracted driver's actions, Snapchat refuted claims of app usage prior to the crash and made efforts to have the lawsuit thrown out of court.

Smartphone apps have the potential to distract thousands of drivers every day. An individual who gets injured due to the negligence of a distracted motorist may wish to retain a lawyer. Medical expenses can quickly accrue when a negligent driver has caused pain and suffering. If a victim has suffered a brain injury or other serious injury, an accident investigation can provide evidence for a liability case.
